Pulwama, a district once known for violence, is making history by hosting its first-ever night cricket tournament. The event has drawn hundreds of spectators, marking a dramatic shift from its troubled past, particularly the 2019 terror attack that killed 40 CRPF soldiers.
The tournament features 12 teams from across Jammu and Kashmir, with the opening match played between Royal Goodwill and Sultan Springs Baramulla. The games are being played under floodlights, creating a festive atmosphere that's bringing the community together.
Watch: Thousands attend day-night match in PulwamaPDP MLA Waheed Para shared his excitement about this positive change. "For the first time, a day-night cricket match is being played and people have come in large numbers to watch it," he told ANI. He further added, "This is the beginning of new hope for the youth of Kashmir, as after years of unrest, they have finally got this opportunity. We will ensure that such tournaments are organised in all the districts."
The transformation is striking. Instead of news about encounters and violence, Pulwama is now making headlines for sports. The sound of cricket balls hitting bats has replaced the sounds of conflict. Young people are choosing to pick up cricket bats rather than engage in violence.
This cricket tournament is more than just a sporting event. It's become a powerful symbol of peace and progress in the region. The sight of hundreds of people gathering peacefully to enjoy cricket shows how far Pulwama has come from its troubled past. It's giving new hope to the community and helping write a new chapter in the district's history.
