The former captain, renowned for his all-round skills, contested and won a seat for the ruling Awami League in the January general elections.

Shakib hasn't represented Bangladesh since the conclusion of the 50-over World Cup in November, with his last Test appearance dating back to April 2023 against Ireland.

Balancing his parliamentary commitments, Shakib has also been actively participating in the 50-over Dhaka Premier League this month.

His inclusion in the squad by the Bangladesh Cricket Board follows a disappointing defeat by 328 runs in the opening Test in Sylhet on Monday, where the hosts struggled to surpass 200 runs in either innings.

In the squad reshuffle, 23-year-old batsman Towhid Hridoy, who is yet to debut in the five-day format, made room for Shakib after being omitted from the playing XI in the first Test.

Furthermore, uncapped Mushfik Hasan has been sidelined from the second and final Test due to an ankle injury, paving the way for fellow pacer Hasan Mahmud to step in as his replacement.

Bangladesh Test squad:

Najmul Hossain Shanto (capt), Zakir Hasan, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shadman Islam, Liton Das, Mominul Haque, Shakib Al Hasan, Shahadat Hossain Dipu, Mehidy Hassan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Nahid Rana, Hasan Mahmud.
