A feat no Indian has achieved: Bangladesh’s Mushfiqur Rahim joins elite Test cricket club

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh veteran Mushfiqur Rahim etched his name into cricketing history on Thursday, becoming only the 11th player ever to score a century in his 100th Test — a rare milestone that no Indian batter has achieved to date.

Resuming on 99 on the second morning against Ireland in Mirpur, the 38-year-old pushed a single to get to his hundred, removed his helmet, raised both hands skyward, and dropped to the ground in an emotional celebration. The Sher-e-Bangla crowd erupted while the Ireland players offered warm applause for the historic moment.

Rahim now joins an exclusive club that includes legends such as Colin Cowdrey, Javed Miandad, Gordon Greenidge, Alec Stewart, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Joe Root and David Warner. Before Thursday, only ten cricketers in Test history had marked their 100th appearance with a hundred — underlining the scale of Rahim’s achievement.
His 106 — crafted over 214 balls with five boundaries — was his 13th Test ton, pulling him level with Mominul Haque for the most Test centuries by a Bangladeshi. More importantly, his innings steadied Bangladesh after an early wobble at 95/3 on day one, laying the platform for a strong first-innings total.

Rahim eventually edged left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys to second slip, where Andy Balbirnie completed a sharp catch, but the standing ovation that followed captured the significance of the occasion.

Bangladesh had already taken a 1-0 lead in the series after winning the first Test by an innings and 47 runs, but all eyes on Thursday were on Rahim — who also became the first Bangladeshi to play 100 Tests this week.

Earlier, teammate Shakib Al Hasan penned an emotional tribute on Facebook, recalling how he watched Rahim’s debut at Lord’s in 2005 and calling him an inspiration for “countless cricketers in Bangladesh and beyond”.

Before play began, Rahim was presented with a special 100th-Test cap and commemorative mementos by former captains Habibul Bashar, Akram Khan, Aminul Islam and Nazmul Abedeen — with his family watching a milestone that will stand as one of Bangladesh’s greatest Test cricket stories.
