... THE RUN CHASE ...
Right then, New Zealand have posted a competitive total on the board and will have to bowl really well to defend it. Sri Lanka knows that they have done the hard work with the ball and just has to back that up with the bat and they will take a 1-0 lead in the series. Will they be able to do it? Or will the Kiwis stop them? We will find out soon. Join us in a bit for the run chase.
Finn Allen is up for a quick chat. He says that with the base that they hadthey were expecting a lot more but looking at the wicket we are happy with this score. He adds that the track certainly has enough for the bowlers as the tracking is helping the seamers and we have a solid total on the board so the team feels they could defend it.
For Sri Lanka, Chamika Karunaratne was the best bowler as he scalped 4 wickets at an economy below 4 and was well helped by Lahiru and Kasun as they scalped a couple each and also Dilshan Madushanka and Dasun Shanaka who took a wicket each. Whenever a partnership looked like stepping up on the paddle, Lankan bowlers broke through it. Shanaka was fantastic with his bowling changes and field settings. The run chase would be really interesting as the pitch is helpful for the bowlers who will be consistent in grouping while the batters would love their time in the middle as well.
After being asked to bat first the Kiwis started sensationally with debutant Chad Bowes and Finn Allen taking the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers. The introduction of Lahiru Kumara into the attack proved vital for Dasun Shanaka as he removed Chad Bowes in his very first over. Sri Lankan bowlers kept taking wickets on a regular basis and never let the Kiwis settle down. The batter did get a good start but couldn't capitalize and convert it into a big one. Finn Allen scored a half-century and debutant Rachin Ravindra was impressive as he fell just one short of his half-century.
Sri Lanka has done tremendously well to pull back things in their favor by picking up wickets at regular intervals. From 147/3 after the 26th over to restricting the Kiwis to a score of 274 runs the visitors have helped themselves massively in the first ODI game of this series.
