Pooran, who retired from the international cricket in a surprise announcement on Monday, has been elevated to the captaincy role and takes over from fellow West Indian Kieron Pollard, who had led the team last season.
"This left-handed wicket-keeper batter is one of the world's most feared batters going around. At the peak of his powers currently, he's all set to take us to greater glories under his leadership," added the release.
MI New York will look get things off on a promising note when they take on Texas Super Kings at the Oakland Coliseum on June 13.
