NEW DELHI: After being named as the new captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the IPL 2025, star batter Shreyas Iyer made history as the first Indian player to lead three different IPL teams.

Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to their IPL title victory in 2024, was signed by PBKS for a record-breaking Rs 26.75 crore, becoming the second-most expensive player in the November auction.

Apart from leading KKR, Iyer was also at the helm at Delhi Capitals and guided them to the final of the 2020 edition. He remains the only captain in IPL history to reach the final with two different teams.

In the history of IPL, Only two players have led three different franchises before Iyer. Sri Lankan great Mahela Jayawardene began his IPL leadership journey with Kings XI Punjab, followed by stints at Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Delhi Capitals.


Similarly, Australian batter Steve Smith has led three teams in the tournament: Pune Warriors India, Rising Pune Super Giants, and Rajasthan Royals.

"I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with coach Ponting. The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title," said Iyer in a statement.


The 2024 season was unforgettable for Iyer. Not only did he win the IPL with KKR, but he also led Mumbai to their second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title.

Additionally, he was a key member of the Mumbai team that clinched both the Ranji Trophy and the Irani Trophy.
