Shreyas Iyer will don the Punjab Kings jersey in the upcoming IPL 2025 season after being acquired for an unprecedented ₹26.75 crore during the IPL mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday.
Released by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) prior to the auction, Iyer had a stellar 2024 season, leading KKR to their third IPL title after missing the 2023 season due to a back injury. Initially purchased by KKR for ₹12.25 crore in 2022, Iyer served as captain after spending seven successful seasons with the Delhi Capitals (DC). His IPL captaincy journey began in 2018 when he replaced Gautam Gambhir mid-season for the then Delhi Daredevils.
Known for his finesse against spin bowling, Iyer has amassed 3,127 runs in 116 IPL matches at a strike rate of 127.47, including 21 half-centuries. Across all T20 formats, he has scored 5,759 runs in 215 matches at a strike rate of 132.57, featuring three centuries and 36 fifties.

Iyer’s pre-auction form was a testament to his prowess. He smashed an unbeaten 130 off 57 balls in Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy opener against Goa, with a strike rate of 228.07, laced with 11 fours and 10 sixes. His domestic season performance was equally impressive, scoring 154 runs in the Duleep Trophy, including two fifties, and contributing to Mumbai’s Irani Cup triumph with scores of 57 and 8.

In the ongoing Ranji Trophy, Iyer has been in red-hot form, accumulating 452 runs in four matches at an average of 90.40, highlighted by a double century (233). Overall, since returning to domestic cricket, Iyer has amassed 801 runs in 14 innings across nine matches, averaging 61.61, with three centuries and three fifties.

Despite his domestic success, Iyer’s international appearances have been limited. He last played for India during the ODI series against Sri Lanka in August, scoring 38 runs across three innings.
