'No bandwidth to play': R Ashwin reveals reason behind sudden IPL retirement
Ravichandran Ashwin has opened up on his sudden decision to call time on his Indian Premier League career. The veteran off-spinner, who retired from international cricket in December 2024, announced earlier this week that he was also stepping away from the IPL, signing off with Chennai Super Kings, the franchise where his journey began.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin explained that he no longer had the energy to commit to the demanding three-month IPL schedule. He admitted that the travel, matches and recovery periods had become increasingly difficult to manage with age.

“I was thinking if I can play IPL next year. Three months of IPL is a little too much for me. It’s draining. This is one of the reasons why I’m awe-struck by seeing someone like MS Dhoni. As you grow older, the bandwidth to play IPL becomes lesser,” Ashwin said. His comments came after speculation that his exit was linked to CSK’s plans for the mini-auction.
The 38-year-old also hinted at exploring opportunities overseas. Reports have connected him with The Hundred and SA20, and Ashwin confirmed that he has registered for another league but did not disclose details. He added that he is open to coaching in the future but would prefer to do so on his own terms.
Ashwin signed off with a heartfelt post on social media, writing, “They say every ending has a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”
Over a career spanning 16 seasons, Ashwin featured in 221 IPL matches, claiming 187 wickets at an economy of 7.20. He also contributed 833 runs with the bat, including a half-century, while representing CSK, Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals.
