IPL: Punjab Kings' Cooper Connolly shrugs off Glenn Maxwell comparisons
MUMBAI: Heading into the IPL 2026 auction, Punjab Kings were seeking a replacement for Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell, who chose to sit out the season. PBKS eventually signed 22-year-old Cooper Connolly for Rs 3 crore, viewing him both as a potential Maxwell-type option and a long-term investment.

Connolly has been in red-hot form for Perth Scorchers in the ongoing Big Bash League, scoring 136 runs in two innings at an average of 68, including two fluent fifties at No. 3. An Australian spin-bowling allrounder like Maxwell, Connolly can hit cleanly, bowl useful left-arm spin and is an outstanding fielder— traits that have triggered early comparisons.
Asked about those parallels in a virtual media interaction on Monday, Connolly was quick to play them down. “The comparisons to Maxie, I’ll take it. But he’s a world class player. I’m a long way from being as good as him,” he said.
Instead, Connolly stressed that his focus is solely on contributing to Punjab Kings in his maiden IPL season. “I’m just looking forward to playing positive cricket and winning games for Punjab. Last year they didn’t quite win it, but this year looks promising. I’m excited to get over there and chase the trophy.”
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer has indicated that Connolly could be used as a finisher, but the youngster says he is happy batting anywhere. “I’m still learning the No. 3 role with the Scorchers and enjoy it. But if my role in the IPL is different, that’s totally fine. I like being versatile—whether it’s at three or in the middle order, I’m happy to perform whatever role the team needs.”
Connolly is also relishing the challenge of the IPL’s intensity and conditions. “It’s probably the most competitive tournament in the world, and I’m looking forward to testing myself against the best bowlers.”
Acknowledging the contrast with Australian pitches, he admitted adapting to spin will be crucial. “Australia has fast, bouncy wickets, but playing spin in India is a big challenge. It’s about learning from those who’ve done it for years and adapting my methods. There are some quality spinners in the IPL, and I’m really looking forward to that challenge.”
Though he hasn’t played much international cricket-just one Test, eight ODIs and 6 T20Is- the 22-year-old, who is a regular member of the Australia A side, gave a glimpse of his special ability when he smashed 71 not out off 53 balls to star in Australia’s two-wicket win over India in the second ODI at Adelaide in Oct 23.
