MUMBAI: Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga is amongst the seven players released by defending champions Mumbai Indians ahead of the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. Having taken 170 scalps, the 37-year-old Malinga is the IPL's highest wicket-taker, but didn't travel to the UAE to play in IPL 2020.

Apart from Malinga, MI have released Kiwi quick Mitchell McClenaghan, Australian pacers Nathan Coulter-Nile and James Pattinson, Guyanese all-rounder Sherfane Rutherford, uncapped leg-spinner Prince Balwant Rai and fast bowler Digvijay Deshmukh from their squad. MI, who won a record fifth title in 2020, now have 18 players in their squad with seven spots open which can be filled in the IPL mini-auction, likely to be held on February 11.

MI can now go and pick as many as four overseas players for the next season. The IPL giants have retained their core, which has enabled them to lift the IPL trophy in back-to-back seasons.

Having released Malinga, Pattinson, Coulter-Nile and McClenaghan, MI will look to strengthen their bowling in the upcoming IPL auction.
