MUMBAI: Mumbai Indians, who had struggled with their bowling in the first three games of IPL-12 handed Australian paceman
Jason Behrendorff his debut at the Wankhede against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday evening. And what a decision it turned out to be.
IPL Schedule | IPL Points TableThe 28-year-old, who had joined the squad only a couple of days prior to the clash, after playing the five-match ODI series against Pakistan, hit form straight away, returning with figures of 4-0-22-2.
Not only was he successful in containing the run-flow, he struck two crucial blows from which CSK could not recover.
First up, he got rid of opener
Ambati Rayudu, who could do little against a delivery that took off from a length and slanted away from him. Rayudu edged the ball to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. Behrendorff then had the measure of
Suresh Raina after
Kieron Pollard pulled off a stunning catch on the last ball of the fifth over.
"It was a serious catch, wasn't it? Very fortunate to be fair. We set up a plan for that knowing that he loves to back away and hit over the off side. Personally, I was a little bit wider than I would have liked but Polly took a great catch which was fantastic," said Behrendorff after the game.
So what did he make of the experience of finally playing in the IPL? "It's really exciting. Unfortunately, I was not able to come last year. There is such a buzz about the
IPL every time you watch it, every time you hear about it.
"People have really positive things to say. As you saw tonight, there were a lot of sixes, a lot of wickets and some serious catching as well. It's awesome to be part of this competition and hopefully we can have some more wins along the way," he said.
