The Indian Premier League (IPL) began in the year 2008. Since its inception, the IPL has nurtured some of the best talent in the country who have gone on to represent the nation as well. This is true not only for Indians but also for the overseas players who have played in the league.
The craze of the IPL has increased year-by-year as is evident by the number of fans flocking the stadiums to watch the games live and also by the number of viewership coupled by the blockbuster amounts spent on broadcast rights.
It has turned into a massive money churner, not just for the administrators but also for the players, who get paid huge sums of money if they get picked by a team in the auction.
The price at which the players get picked has only increased as the seasons have passed by. We have seen some mind boggling sums of money for which the players have been bought in the IPL. Most recent being the purchase of Australian pacer Mitchell Starc by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 auction for a sum of Rs. 24.75 crore.
The upcoming IPL auction for the 2025 season, may well see bidding wars for the players, in turn increasing their final bidding amount and another expensive purchase in the history of the
league’s auction.
There have been some expected as well as surprising buys each year. A lot of times, we have seen that the top buy fails to live up to the expectations on the field of play. We will have to wait and see what the 2025 IPL auction has in store.
