'Skip the IPL if you need rest': Gautam Gambhir sparks workload debate after Shubman Gill injury
Shubman Gill’s recent neck injury at Eden Gardens has reignited the ongoing discussion around workload management for players who lead across formats. The 26-year-old, who has been a constant presence for India since the Asia Cup in September, has participated in all four series over the past month. While other players have been rotated, Gill has juggled responsibilities as T20I vice-captain and ODI captain, leading to concerns about the toll on his body.
The injury ruled him out of the second and final Test against South Africa—a crucial match for India in their bid to save the series—and sparked fresh debate about whether his workload should be managed.
However, India head coach Gautam Gambhir dismissed the idea of enforced rest. Speaking at Media Day ahead of the second Test, JioStar expert Aakash Chopra revealed Gambhir’s candid take. “I asked this question to Gautam before the Test match against the West Indies. His point was that if you need workload management, then skip the IPL. If you don't want to lead because leading the IPL team puts too much pressure, then don't lead. And while playing for India, if you are fit, you are not mentally fatigued,” Chopra said.
Chopra agreed with the assessment, adding that form should guide playing time unless mental fatigue becomes an issue. “And as a batter, I can also second the opinion that when you are going through a good form, you really want to maximise. Because you never know when the bad form hits you and where the next one is going to come from. So, if there is no fitness concern per se and if there is no mental burnout concern that is very individual-specific, you stay with them and you play as much as you can, as often as you can,” he said.
While the BCCI has not officially confirmed his status, reports suggest Gill will need at least 10 days of rest to recover fully. India will hope he is fit in time for the ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30, which will be followed by a T20I series.
