After Gautam Gambhir's 'BCCI to decide future' remark, Delhi Capitals co-owner calls for 'specialist red ball coach'
India men's cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir on Wednesday said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will decide his future after the team was whitewashed 2-0 by South Africa in the Test series. He also pointed to the results India have achieved during his tenure.
Gambhir spoke after India lost the second Test by 408 runs, which gave South Africa a 2-0 series win.
"It is up to the BCCI to decide. I've said it in my first press conference when I took over as the head coach. Indian cricket is important, I'm not important. And I sit here and say exactly the same thing," Gambhir said at the press conference.
"And yes, people can keep forgetting about it. I'm the same guy who got results in England as well, with a young team. And I'm sure you guys will forget very soon, because a lot of people keep talking about New Zealand (home series whitewash last year). And I'm the same guy who won the Champions Trophy, and Asia Cup as well," he added.
Gambhir said he would not avoid responsibility for the result against South Africa.
"The blame lies with everyone and starts with me," he said in his first comments after the 0-2 loss.
After the defeat, IPL franchise Delhi Capitals' co-owner Parth Jindal said that India should appoint a specialist red-ball coach.
"Not even close, what a complete thrashing at home! Don’t remember seeing our test side being so weak at home!!! This is what happens when red ball specialists are not picked," Jindal posted on X. He added, "This team is nowhere near reflective of the deep strength we possess in the red ball format. Time for India to move to a specialist red ball coach for Test cricket."
India lost the second Test by 408 runs, their biggest defeat by runs, and South Africa secured their first Test series win in India in 25 years.
Right now, Gambhir's Test record as a coach stands at a well under-par 7 wins, 10 defeats and 2 draws in 19 matches for win percentage of 36.82.
