This defeat marked only the second time India have lost an ODI after scoring more than 350 runs — the first was against Australia in Mohali in 2019.
Earlier, Kohli (102 off 93) and Gaikwad (105 off 83) powered India to 358/5 with a 195-run stand for the third wicket — the highest for India against South Africa in ODIs at that position. Stand-in skipper KL Rahul added a rapid 66* off 43 to push the total further.

Chasing a demanding 359, the Proteas rode on Aiden Markram’s brilliant 110, a blistering 34-ball 54 from Dewald Brevis, and Matthew Breetzke’s composed 68 to cross the finish line with four balls remaining. Heavy dew provided little assistance to India’s bowlers, and Prasidh Krishna’s expensive spell (2/79) further dented their defence, despite late breakthroughs from him and Arshdeep Singh (2/54). In the end, Corbin Bosch (29* off 15) and Keshav Maharaj (10* off 14) held their nerve to complete the chase.
Markram set the tone early, building a crucial 101-run stand with Temba Bavuma (46) after the early loss of Quinton de Kock. He mixed power with precision and capitalised on the dew, even surviving a dropped catch on 53. His dismissal brought Brevis and Breetzke together, whose 92-run partnership put South Africa firmly in control before the finishing touches came from the lower order.
