IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill achieves multiple milestones on Test captaincy debut - in numbers
NEW DELHI: India's new Test captain Shubman Gill marked a memorable start to his red-ball leadership by notching multiple milestones during the opening day of the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, on Friday.
Live Score: India vs England, 1st Test Day 1
The 25-year-old Gill smashed his fastest Test half-century, reaching the mark in just 56 balls with eight crisp boundaries. It was his eighth Test fifty overall and his highest score in England so far, coming in his fourth Test appearance in the country.

In the process, Gill also became the ninth Indian player to score a fifty in his maiden innings as Test captain, and the youngest to do so at 25 years and 285 days. He brought up the landmark with a stylish four off England pacer Josh Tongue, anchoring India's innings alongside opener Yashasvi Jaiswal after KL Rahul's dismissal.
This outing not only underlined Gill's form but also his readiness to lead India through a critical transitional phase following the Test retirements of legends Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin.
Earlier, England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl, putting India in on a bright, hot day. Gill, speaking at the toss, noted, “Would've bowled first as well. Might be a bit tough in the first session but it should get better for batting.”
India made two significant inclusions: Sai Sudharsan, who made his debut at No. 3, and Karun Nair, returning to the Test side after more than eight years.
With this performance, Gill has not only given India a strong start but also stamped his presence as a calm, confident leader ushering a new era in Indian Test cricket.
