He is also the first Indian to score over 700 runs in a Test series in England and becomes only the second captain ever, after Don Bradman, to score 750+ runs in their debut series as Test captain.
Shubman Gill has now gone past Sunil Gavaskar to become the Indian captain with the most runs in a single Test series, ending with 754 runs in just 10 innings.
India had a strong first session on Day 3. Nightwatchman Akash Deep, who resumed on 4, surprised everyone with a fearless counterattack. He struck his maiden Test fifty and shared a 107-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Akash Deep scored 66 off 94 balls before falling to Jamie Overton. Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 85 as India reached 189 for 3 at lunch.
By the time Gill fell post-lunch, India’s lead had gone past 150. Captain Gill may have fallen cheaply in his final innings of the series, but the numbers he leaves behind will be remembered for a long time.
