The International Cricket Council (ICC) came up with the idea of day-night Tests to popularise the format and the first-ever day-night Test match was played in 2015.

However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was initially hesitant to play day-night Test matches due to the quality of the pink ball.

But, as the years progressed and other nations started playing more day-night Tests, BCCI started experimenting with the pink ball by scheduling day-night first-class matches in domestic competitions like the Duleep Trophy.


Eventually, India played their first day-night Test in November 2019 against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. India won their first-ever pink-ball Test by an innings and 46 runs.

Since then, India have played three more pink-ball Tests. In December 2020, India lost to Australia in Adelaide, being bowled out for just 36 runs in the second innings. It was their first away
day-night Test match.


India won their next two pink-ball Tests. They beat England by 10 wickets in February 2021 at Ahmedabad and Sri Lanka by 238 runs in March 2022 at Bengaluru.

It is worth noting that India have not won an away pink-ball Test with the only loss coming against Australia. All their day-night Test victories so far have been in India.


In December 2024, India will play a day-night Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. It is part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
