Shubman should have scored a ton: Father

CHANDIGARH: Celebrations broke out at Shubman Gill's housing society in Mohali after Rishabh Pant scored the winning runs. They had reasons to feel happy.

However, Shubman's father Lakhwinder Gill, an ardent cricket fan, believes his son should have scored the century. "A century would have been good for his confidence. He was batting so well, and I don't know why all of a sudden, he played away from his body," he told TOI.

"The six innings he has batted in this Test series, he was always looking comfortable at the crease. But for me, the worrying sign is his mode of dismissals. He is chasing the ball way outside the off stump, and I am sure other teams would have noticed it. Hopefully, he will learn from it and will not repeat this mistake," he added.

Playing only his third Test, Shubman Gill hit a fine 91 to keep India in the hunt in pursuit of a 328-run target against Australia on Day 5 at The Gabba in Brisbane. (Getty Images)

The Aussies tried their best to intimidate Gill with bouncers, but the 21-year-old Indian batsman matched fire with fire with an array of attacking shots all round the wicket. (Getty Images)

Gill hit two sixes in his knock, both off Starc. The first came just before lunch over the third man fence and the second was after lunch over the square leg boundary. (Getty Images)

Though Gill scored 7 runs in the first innings at The Gabba, his second innings' 91-run knock and his 114-run stand with Cheteshwar Pujara for the second wicket proved that he is the real deal and he has made a big case for himself to be considered as a first choice opener for India. (AP Photo)

The Gill family can't wait to meet Shubman after the gap of six months, and they are only counting days now.

"For the past six months, we have only seen him on TV or through video calls. He has been living in the bio-bubble for the past six months. We can't wait to meet him," he said.
