NEW DELHI: Australian captain Pat Cummins and premier spinner Nathan Lyon on Wednesday presented Ravichandran Ashwin with an autographed jersey as the veteran spinner announced his retirement from international cricket.

The announcement came as a surprise when Ashwin accompanied Indian captain Rohit Sharma to declare his retirement in the post-match press conference.

Earlier hints were evident when cameras captured an emotional exchange between Ashwin and Virat Kohli on the final day of the third Test in Brisbane. The poignant moment showed an emotional Ashwin being embraced by Kohli, signalling that a significant announcement was imminent after the Test's conclusion.

Following Ashwin's retirement announcement, congratulatory messages flowed in, celebrating his distinguished career.

The BCCI shared a video on social media where Australia's Cummins and Lyon presented Ashwin with the signed jersey in the Gabba's corridor. Cummins was heard saying, "Well done mate, thank you, you have been great."

Beginning his Test career in 2011 against West Indies, Ashwin excelled in red-ball cricket. His impressive statistics include 106 Tests, 537 wickets, 37 five-wicket hauls, and 3,503 runs.

Against Australia, Ashwin participated in 23 Tests, claiming 115 wickets with an economy rate of 2.71.

At age 38, Ashwin holds the record for most wickets in a single Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, securing 29 wickets in the 2020-21 series.

His Test career is marked by numerous achievements, including becoming the fastest Indian to reach 350 Test wickets. He stands as India's second-highest Test wicket-taker with 537 dismissals at an economy rate of 2.83.
