Pat Cummins reveals mastermind behind Travis Head bowling to Rishabh Pant
Following Australia's victory over India in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, securing a 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, captain Pat Cummins described the match as one of the best he's participated in. The 184-run win was a memorable one for the team.
Cummins received the Johnny Mullagh medal, an award named after a prominent player from the 1868 Aboriginal tour of England. The award recognises the Player of the Match. Cummins was honoured for his outstanding all-round performance.
He contributed significantly with both bat and ball. His scores of 49 and 41 were crucial, and he took 3-89 and 3-28 with the ball.
"What an amazing Test match, I reckon one of the best I've been part of. All week the crowd has been ridiculous, and it's been amazing to be part of. Marnus helped me out in that second innings big time, happy to contribute," he said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Cummins highlighted the importance of the substantial first-innings total and the contributions from the lower order. These factors allowed Australia to gain control of the match. He also emphasized the team's focus on lower-order batting.
"Amazing innings from Steve, winning the toss, it wasn't easy on the first day, to get up to high 400s was terrific. We put a lot of work into our lower-order batting, we work a lot on how best to bowl to the opposition batters firstly, but also how we can contribute with the bat."
The decision not to declare overnight was a tactical move to minimize the chances of an Indian victory. Cummins explained the strategy.
"We wanted to take an India victory out of the equation (by not declaring). We had plenty of runs to play with, and as many helmets around the bat as we could."
He further elaborated on the decision to have Travis Head bowl to Rishabh Pant. This move was suggested by the coaching staff and aimed to manage the over rate.
“We were a bit behind on the over rate, so we thought, get Trav in there, it may help us out with that. Him bowling to Pant was an idea by the coaching staff. Very happy change room, we'll savour this for a little bit before we get to Sydney."
Head, who dismissed Pant, expressed his satisfaction in contributing with the ball. He acknowledged his quieter performance with the bat in this Test.
"I've had four and a half days, didn't do much with the bat, happy to contribute. (The plan to Pant) Have everyone on the fence and bowl a rank one. Two teams went at it pretty hard, and there were moments where both teams stepped up."

The celebration has a context based on a social media post by Head. But I agree prima facie it can have a very different interpretations that gives off ungentlemanly vibe.Read allPost comment
