Jasprit Bumrah who was named as the vice-captain for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will lead Team India in the first Test against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth in the absence of
Rohit Sharma.
Bumrah was made the captain of India in a Test match against England at Birmingham in 2022 as the regular skipper Rohit failed to recover in time from Covid.
This was Bumrah's first ever game as a captain at any level, in the process, becoming the first fast bowler to captain India since Kapil Dev whose last match as captain was in 1987.
However, Bumrah's record as captain of India in whites is not good so far as India went on to lose the only Test match in which he led the side thanks to centuries by Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow which helped England chase down India's total of 378 runs in the fourth innings.
Bumrah was once again named the captain of a young Indian Team to Tour Ireland for a 3-match T20I series in 2023. India won the series 2-0 as the third game of that series was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.
The upcoming first Test match against Australia at Perth will be Bumrah's fifth match as captain of India in all formats.
Bumrah's overall record as captain of India:Matches: 4
Wins: 2
Losses: 1
Draws: 0
No Result: 1
