A job well done in the day by Gill and Pujara

STUMPS on DAY 1

Play ends just short of the stipulated 90 overs, with India at 36/1 in 11 overs, thanks largely to debutant opener Shubman Gill's 28*. Giving him company is Cheteshwar Pujara (7*) after Gill lost his fellow opener Mayank Agarwal (0) early to Mitchell Starc. India trail Australia by 159 runs, after Jasprit Bumrah (4/56), R Ashwin (3/35) and debutant Mohammed Siraj (2/40) starred to bowl Australia out for 195, after the hosts won the toss and opted to bat first. Marnus Labuschagne top-scored for the Aussies with 48.

Even the leaves from Gill are looking confident now as shadows of the stands creep in to cover majority of the green at MCG. 4.3 overs officially left in the day. India 36/1, trail Australia (195) by 159 runs.

Gill put down in the slips off Cummins! Labuschagne at third slip the guilty man. It pops out and Gill takes a single. India 5/1.

FOUR! First runs for Gill in Test cricket, and he brings it up with a nice straight drive past mid-off against a delivery pitched a little further up by Cummins. India 4/1 in 3.3. overs.

Make it three maidens on the bounce. India yet to open their account and the Aussie pacers Starc and Cummins consistently going past the outside edge.

Jadeja takes the last Aussie wicket in the form of Pat Cummins who tries to go big but is caught in the deep by Siraj. Bumrah remained the pick of the bowlers with his 4/56, well supported by Ashwin's 3/35 and debutant Siraj's 2/40. Labuschagne (48) and Head (38) fought valiantly for a while but couldn't kick on against a disciplined Indian bowling unit after skipper Tim Paine won the toss and elected to bat.
