CHENNAI: If Day 1 was about Karnataka's prowess in their pace bowling department, Day 2 was all about the Vinay Kumar's side consolidating their position with the bat.
The second day of the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals between Karnataka and Mumbai in Nagpur saw the former come up with a clinical display as they were 394 for 6 at close of play on Friday. Karnataka have a healthy lead of 221 runs going into Day 3.
1x1 polls
Shreyas Gopal (80 batting, 7x4) and Vinay Kumar (31 batting, 3x4) were at the crease guarding Karnataka's ship. For Mumbai, Shivam Dubey shone with figures of 5 for 79. He received little support from other Mumbai bowlers and it was yet another day to forget for them.
Starting the day at 115 for 1, Karnataka lost Mayank Agarwal (78, 11x4, 1x6) was the first to depart - caught by keeper Aditya Tare off Shivam Malhotra. The score read 135 for 2. Mumbai then nabbed the big fish - Karun Nair (16, 2x4) - to leave Karnataka at 161 for 3.
By the end of the first session, Karnataka had reached 190 for 4. When K Abbas (50, 5x4) was trapped leg-before by Shivam, Karnataka had swelled their lead to 45. Just when one thought that Mumbai will make inroads into the opposition's lower-order, Karnataka fought back.
The sixth-wicket stand between CM Gautam (79, 12x4, 1x6) and Shreyas Gopal yielded 103 invaluable runs for the side. That particular partnership turned the tide decisively in Karnataka's favour. Both Gautam and Gopal didn't leave one scoring opportunity go waste as they mixed caution with aggression. When Gautam was trapped dead in front by Shivam in the 92nd over of Karnataka's innings, they had taken a 149-run lead over their opponents. From thereon, Vinay came to the party and ensured it was Karnataka who took the day's honours.
Brief scores: Mumbai 1st innings 173 vs Karnataka 395 for 6 in 122 overs (Shreyas 80 batting, Gautam 79, Mayank 78; Shivam 5 for 79).
