MUMBAI: Even as the Mumbai selectors named him in the squad on Friday, uncertainty continues to prevail over
Prithvi Shaw’s participation in the
Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against
Karnataka, The match will be held in Nagpur from December 7 to 11.
Shaw is likely to be named as the captain of the India Under-19 team for the Youth World Cup in January, for which the squad will be picked on Sunday.
The 18-year-old batting sensation, who’s cracked five hundreds in his nascent firstclass career so far, may need to attend a camp, which starts from December 7 for the India juniors, unless the
Board of Control for Cricket in India (
BCCI) makes an exception and alows him to play in the quarterfinal.
The BCCI’s reaction will only be known only on December 3, when India’s Under-19 World Cup team is selected. “Since we’ve not selected the team so far, we’ve not decided (on Prithvi) We’ll take call only at the selection meeting. We’ll have to see how many boys are involved (in the Ranji quarters). The problem is that he has to get used to white-ball cricket too. Let us see, it will be too early to say anything,” a source told TOI. Much could depend on batting legend and current India Under-19 coach Rahul Dravid-in the recent past Dravid allowed Shaw to mis the Asia Cup and afew other U-19 fixtures to play in the Ranji Trophy this season.
Meanwhile, paceman Sagar Trivedi was named as a replcement for the injured Shardul Thakur, who hurt his shoulder badly while taking a catch during the last league game against Tripura.
The squad: Aditya Tare (Captain), Surya Kumar Yadav (Vice-Captain), Dhawal Kulkarni, Siddhesh Lad, Jay Bista, Prithvi Shaw, Akhil Herwadkar, Sufiyan Shaikh, Akash Parkar, Karsh Kothari, Sagar Trivedi, Vijay Gohil, Shivam Malhotra, Shivam Dube, Shubham Ranjane.
