MUMBAI: The Mumbai selectors on Wednesday dropped experienced allrounder
Abhishek Nayar - instrumental in taking the Ranji giants into the premier domestic championship's final last season - from the side's last and must-win league game against
Tripura
at the
Wankhede Stadium
. Poor form has been cited as the primary reason.
"We've left him out of this game purely due to lack of form," said former India pacer and current Mumbai chief selector
Ajit Agarkar. While another selector did not rule out the 34-year-old's return for the Ranji knockouts, should Mumbai qualify, sources say the decision has been taken keeping the future in mind, which means the veteran player may find it tough to make a comeback. Interestingly, the Mumbai selectors named only 14, instead of the usual 15 players for the match.
In five Ranji games this season, all
Nayar
has managed is 130 runs@18.57, at a poor strike rate of 24.43. His biggest contribution with the bat was in the draw against Baroda at the Wankhede, where he hung on for 108 balls to make eight runs in the final session. He, of course, helped Mumbai save the match. It was, however, apparent this season that the left-hander wasn't batting as fluently as he's known to.
