IND vs ENG highlights, 5th Test Match Day 1: Karun Nair hits first Test fifty in 3,148 days; India 204/6 at Stumps

IND vs ENG highlights, 5th Test Match Day 1: On a rain-curtailed opening day at The Oval, India reached 204 for 6 against England in the final Test of the five-match series. With just 64 overs possible due to multiple rain interruptions, the match saw plenty of movement for seamers and enough drama to hint at a closely fought decider. England, led by stand-in captain Ollie Pope in the absence of the injured Ben Stokes, made four changes and wasted no time after opting to bowl first in favourable conditions.

Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue made immediate impact. Atkinson trapped Jaiswal lbw early, while Woakes got KL Rahul to play on for 14. India never really recovered from those early jolts. Shubman Gill looked in fine touch but was run out on 21 following a misjudged single and a brilliant direct hit from Atkinson. The India captain slipped while trying to retreat and was left stranded mid-pitch.

Sai Sudharsan fought hard but was undone by a sharp delivery from Tongue, edging to Jamie Smith. Jadeja and Jurel too fell in quick succession, leaving India in a spot of bother at 153 for 6. However, Karun Nair, returning after being dropped for the fourth Test, held his ground. He brought up a well-composed half-century off 89 balls, his first 50-plus score in Test cricket after 3,148 days, following his triple century in 2016.

With Nair at the crease was Washington Sundar, who carried forward the momentum from his maiden Test hundred in the previous match. The two added an unbroken 51-run stand to stabilise the innings. While the English bowlers, especially Atkinson and Tongue, delivered match-shaping spells, their lines wavered on occasions, allowing India to claw back late in the day.

England suffered a minor scare when Woakes appeared to hurt his shoulder diving to stop a boundary and walked off the field. The pitch offered help throughout and the overcast conditions are likely to continue, keeping bowlers interested. With India needing a win to level the series 2-2 and England aiming to close out a home victory, the second day promises crucial action.

India’s decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah, in line with his workload management plan, added to the pressure on their young batting lineup. Despite the setbacks, India ended Day 1 with hope, thanks to Nair’s resilience and Sundar’s composure.

India vs England Live Score: Captain speaks
Shubman Gill: Don't mind losing the toss as long as we win the game. Was a bit confused yesterday about what to do, was a bit overcast but the wicket looks good, we'll look to post good runs in the first innings. Should be a good pitch for the bowlers. We've got three changes. Jurel, Karun and Prasidh in for Pant, Shardul and Bumrah. The boys are looking for one final push and will be giving it their all.

Ollie Pope: We'll bowl. Bit overcast, no-brainer to have a bowl on this pitch. Lost the captain but the others are tracking nicely, we've got a few fresh faces as well. We bat deep, Gus Atkinson and Overton have got runs. We're not going to contend with 2:2, we want to go out there and win it.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Nathan Lyon takes a dig at England
Australia’s greatest off-spinner Nathan Lyon has backed Jack Leach as England’s premier spinner, despite the recent rise of Shoaib Bashir, who is currently sidelined with injury and expected to feature in the 2025-26 Ashes tour.

"I obviously played with Jimmy Anderson last year at Lancashire, and they basically said that they're picking Bashir to do what I do," Lyon said. "So I took a little bit of pride out of Jimmy respecting a little bit of what I've been able to do in my career. But Bashir has been okay. Jacob Bethell is playing this Test match (at The Oval against India), and he looks like he'll take up the spin bowling from Liam Dawson. But in my eyes, Jack Leach is still their best spinner."

The 34-year-old hasn't featured for England since their tour of Pakistan last year, where he had a relatively modest series compared to Noman Ali and Sajid Khan, who helped spin Pakistan to victory in the final two Tests. Despite that, Leach's performance - 16 wickets at an average of 31.43 and a strike rate of 50.75 across three matches - was still significantly better than Bashir's nine wickets at an average of 49.55 and a strike rate of 79.44.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 1: England in a fix
England are without the injured and exhausted trio of Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, and Brydon Carse. India are yet to name their playing XI but are expected to be without Jasprit Bumrah. The London weather has dampened spirits — it poured overnight, and we’re unlikely to get a full day’s play today.

Stokes sustained a grade-three muscle tear in his shoulder during the Old Trafford Test and is unable to play, even as a specialist batsman or captain. “It was one of those where you were weighing up the risk-reward,” he said, “and the risk was way too high for damaging us any further than it currently is.”

His absence means Ollie Pope — who started the series fighting for his place — will lead England for the fifth time. Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, and Jacob Bethell come into the side in place of Liam Dawson, Stokes, Archer, and Carse.

India vs England Live Score: Selection dilemma
As we build up to the toss at The Oval, India’s playing XI is still under wraps — and so are a few big questions. Will Jasprit Bumrah feature, or will the management opt to rest him after a grueling series? Is this finally the match where Kuldeep Yadav gets a look-in, especially with conditions offering turn later in the game? And after four straight toss losses, can Shubman Gill finally call it right?

Plenty to track as we inch closer to action. Stay with us for updates from the ground, toss news, and confirmed line-ups.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Some other cricket news from England
The highly anticipated semifinal between India and Pakistan in the World Championship of Legends, scheduled for Thursday (July 31) in Birmingham, was cancelled. The Indian team declined to play against their long-time rivals, prompting the organizers to award the match to Pakistan, who will now advance to the final.

This is not the first time India Champions have refused to take the field against Pakistan in the tournament. During the league stage, they had already objected to facing them — specifically raising concerns over Shahid Afridi’s inclusion in the Pakistan squad. Their stance has reportedly remained unchanged for the knockout clash.

India vs England Live Score: Some IPL news
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are keen to acquire India batsman KL Rahul via a trade deal for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Rahul played for Delhi Capitals in the previous season. According to a source, KKR are interested in acquiring the India opener’s services and have sent him feelers regarding this.

A big reason why KKR may be interested in getting Rahul into their fold is the presence of their assistant coach, former India all-rounder Abhishek Nayar.

During his time with the Indian team as assistant coach, Rahul enjoyed an excellent equation with Nayar, and his white-ball resurgence can be attributed to the time he spent practicing and fine-tuning his game with Nayar.

"I've worked really hard on my white-ball game the last year or so. Big shoutout to Abhishek Nayar. I've worked a lot with him ever since he's come into the Indian team. We've spent hours and hours together talking about my white-ball game and how I can be better. We worked hours and hours together in Bombay, and somewhere I have found the fun playing white-ball cricket," Rahul had said during the IPL.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Graham Thorpe tribute
England Test captain Ben Stokes is preparing for an emotional tribute to former England batsman Graham Thorpe during the fifth Test against India at the Oval on August 1, 2025, which would have been Thorpe's 56th birthday. The event, called "A Day for Thorpey," will support the mental health charity Mind, following Thorpe's death by suicide on August 4, 2024.

Thorpe, who struggled with depression and anxiety, was found deceased near his home following a railway incident, as confirmed by police. A recent inquest led by Coroner Jonathan Stevens officially recorded the verdict as suicide, noting there were "shortcomings in the care" provided to Thorpe in his final months.

The left-handed batsman had an illustrious career with Surrey at the Oval, scoring 6,744 Test runs at an average of 44.66 across 100 matches between 1993 and 2005. After his playing career, he served in various coaching positions, including as England's batting chief.

"Thorpey's been a very influential character as a player and a coach in English cricket," Stokes told reporters at the Oval on Wednesday. "A few of us in that dressing room spent a lot of time with him coming through the ranks and, as we got into the main (England) team Thorpey spent a lot of years around us."

Stokes, who will miss the series finale due to a shoulder injury, expressed the significance of the upcoming tribute.

"It's going to be a special day for all English fans, a special day for his family to see how much he meant to English cricket and how much he means to the current England dressing room," he added.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 1: History beckons Gill
In his first series as captain of a team undergoing a major transition, Gill has led from the front and with 722 runs so far, he is only 52 shy off Sunil Gavaskar's record of most runs by an Indian in a single rubber.

He needs another 11 runs to surpass Gavaskar's record of most runs (732) by an Indian captain in a Test series (1978-79 vs West Indies).

The 25-year-old has come of age with four hundreds thus far including a double century and a match-saving 103 in the previous Test at Old Trafford. After low returns in three innings, Gill played the most defining knock of his career in Manchester to enhance his reputation, not just as a batter but also as a captain.

Having played a massive role in earning a famous draw from an almost hopeless situation, Gill and his team go into the match with momentum on their side but gaps to fill.

With 511 runs, K L Rahul has been a model of consistency at the top of the order but more will be expected from Yashasvi Jaiswal and number three Sai Sudharsan on what is generally a decent batting surface.

India vs England Live Score: Ben Stokes on captaincy load
A five match series going down to the wire like the one against India takes a massive toll as leader of the team, said Stokes.

"Big. Big toll. Physically it's very tough, especially out in the field. It is tiring. But the mental side of it as well is just as tiring. This series has gone to the last session every time, don't know if that's ever happened before. It's been a tough, gruelling series but class to play in.

"It's a real test of character, of physicality. The way both teams have fronted up every single day and session, given everything for their country is testament to how much this format means to England and India.

"The easy option would be to not turn up, give up. But both teams have turned up every single day and given absolutely everything and left everything out on the field, I don't see it being any different this week," Stokes added.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Ben Stokes on Manchester draw
Ben Stokes stood by his much talked about call to end the game in Manchester with 15 overs left on day five. India refused his proposal with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar nearing deserving hundreds.

"No regrets but I think it's one of those when you've not been there in the field for 250 overs, you do have a bit more of an understanding towards both sides. The two lads Jadeja and Washington played incredibly well up until that point, so you understand as to why they wanted to stay put there and get their hundreds."

“But, again, as I said at the end of the game, I’m not going to bowl any of my bowlers in a situation where we can’t win and expose any of those guys to injury. We’re over it. I think India are over that whole thing.

"Let’s just try our best not to focus too much on a 20-min period of cricket when it's been such a good series so far.”

IND vs ENG Live Score: India vs England Live Score: What Gill said about the Oval groundsman
"What happened yesterday, I thought, is just absolutely unnecessary. I mean, it's not the first time that we were having a look at the wicket," Gill said on Wednesday.

The skipper, who has scored 722 runs in the four Tests so far, added: "As a captain, I don't know what the fuss was all about."

The series has become increasingly heated, with India refusing to shake hands on a draw early in the fourth Test in Manchester to allow Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja to reach centuries, a decision that angered England.

Gill previously accused England of ignoring the "spirit of cricket" with time-wasting tactics in the third Test at Lord's, where India fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was fined for the aggressive send-off he gave to Ben Duckett.

But he said the incidents were not connected.

"I think I have already explained what happened at Lord's and about even the incident that happened on the last day in the previous Test," he said.

"Both the teams have been very competitive. And sometimes when you are competitive, you know, in the heat of the moment, you do or say things that you might not do (otherwise).

"But I think once the match is over, there is mutual respect between both the teams."

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 1: What Ben Stokes said?
Ben Stokes - "Yeah, it's been a tough, gruelling series, but it's class to play. It's a real test of character, it's a test of physicality, all that kind of stuff. And I think that the way in which both teams have, you know, fronted up every single day and every single session and given everything for their countries is testament to how much this format means to England and India and every other team in the world."

India vs England Live Score: Captain speaks
Shubman Gill - "If you look at the kind of cricket that we have played, sometimes the scorecard of the series doesn't determine that. I think every match that we have played, it was very difficult to decide which team is going to win after four days of cricket. If we are able to do that for every match, for four matches coming outside of India with a relatively young team, I think it is going to be a big achievement for us if we are able to level the series. And the series has been a great learning curve for me. You know, there are some things that you can only learn from experience. And I've learned so much from these four matches that we have played. And hopefully, we are going to finish on a high."

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 1: Interesting facts
- India have won just twice in 15 Tests at The Oval — once in 1971 and again in 2021. While they triumphed over England in their last bilateral outing here, they also suffered a defeat at this venue in the 2023 World Test Championship Final against Australia.

- Shubman Gill is 89 runs away from surpassing Sir Don Bradman's tally of 810 runs in the 1936/37 Ashes — the highest by any player in their first series as captain.

- Joe Root has scored two Test centuries at The Oval, both coming against India — an unbeaten 149 in 2014 and a fluent 125 in 2018.

IND vs ENG Live Score: What will be India's playing XI
The most straightforward change for India is Dhruv Jurel stepping in for the injured Rishabh Pant. Losing their most reliable batter over the past five years will challenge any urge to trade batting depth for added bowling firepower. Akash Deep is expected to return, while Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be rested — although Shubman Gill kept his cards close to his chest on that front. That leaves India with a decision between Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh to replace Anshul Kamboj, who had a modest debut in Manchester. Given the pitch conditions and India’s likely preference for depth, Kuldeep Yadav may once again miss out.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 1: England playing XI
The hosts will be without their inspirational skipper for the final Test, with local favourite Ollie Pope taking over the captaincy duties. Fellow Surrey players Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton have been drafted back into the playing XI after proving their fitness through recent outings in second XI and county matches. Jofra Archer is also missing, with the team management deciding that two back-to-back Tests are too demanding at this stage of his long-awaited comeback. Ben Stokes has been replaced by Jacob Bethell, who comes in at No. 6 and provides a left-arm spin option — covering for the exclusion of Liam Dawson — as England go with a four-pronged pace attack.

India vs England Live Score: What to expect from the Oval?
Just weeks after a heatwave scorched London during the Lord’s Test, conditions have now shifted, with cooler temperatures and light rain predicted on at least three days — including the opening day. So far this season, every County Championship match at The Oval has seen teams choose to bowl first, and most of the big scores have come in the third innings. The exception was Surrey's colossal 820/9 declared against Durham, built around Dom Sibley’s triple century, despite being sent in. However, this pitch appears to have more live grass than others in the series, as Ben Stokes noted on the eve of the match. England have also left out their specialist spinner, suggesting there could be plenty on offer for the seamers.

IND vs ENG Live Score: One final push left in the tank?
All square is still on the table. India trail 1-2, but every day has been a grind, every margin slim. One more push, and the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy could end in a fair reflection of the fight. The scene is set. The players battered. But the story’s final page hasn’t been turned yet.

IND vs ENG Live Score: Under the shadow of the gasometer
That towering, decommissioned gasometer by The Oval looms large again. Once a symbol of energy, now a relic being repurposed into flats. There's a metaphor in there somewhere – for this series, for the bowlers trying to summon one last spell from spent reserves. No refuelling station, only resolve.

IND vs ENG Live Score: From respect to resentment
The feel around the series has shifted. From mutual admiration to spiky encounters. 'Handshake-gate' in Manchester left tempers frayed and fans divided. India believe they stayed firm under fire – mentally, morally. England looked rattled. No one’s let go. Not yet. Not with 2-2 still possible.

IND vs ENG Live Score, 5th Test Match Day 1: Fraying Tempers
No series renamed after Tendulkar and Anderson was going to be a sprint. And this hasn’t been. Seven bowlers past 100 overs, Stokes battling a failing body, Jasprit Bumrah digging deep even as his pace dropped. It’s been a slow burn, and the fire’s taken its toll. England’s captain Ben Stokes is out. Jasprit Bumrah might sit too. But the likes of Chris Woakes and Mohammed Siraj must dig in again.

India vs England highlights, 5th Test Match Day 1: India finished Day 1 of the fifth and final Test against England at 204 for 6, after a rain-hit day at The Oval where only 64 overs were bowled. Recalled pacers Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue proved highly effective in overcast conditions, sharing four wickets between them. Atkinson, playing at his home ground, also pulled off a sharp run-out to dismiss Indian captain Shubman Gill, who slipped while attempting a risky single.

Karun Nair, back in the side after being dropped for the previous Test, top-scored with a gritty 52 not out, marking his first fifty since his famous triple century in 2016. He found support in Washington Sundar, who remained unbeaten on 19, with the duo stitching an unbroken 51-run stand after India had slipped to 153 for 6.

Earlier in the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul fell cheaply, while Sai Sudharsan and Ravindra Jadeja were both undone by late movement. Dhruv Jurel too fell cheaply, leaving India in trouble. With England missing skipper Ben Stokes due to injury and India without Jasprit Bumrah, the decider remains delicately poised. Rain interruptions and movement off the surface made batting tricky, but India’s lower order showed resilience late in the day.
