IND vs ENG highlights, 4th Test Match Day 2: England reach 225/2 at stumps, trail India by 133 runs

Day 2 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford belonged to England as they ended Thursday on a commanding 225 for 2, trailing India by only 133 runs in the first innings. The tone was set by a dominant opening partnership between Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, who capitalised on favourable batting conditions and a largely ineffective Indian bowling attack.

Duckett scored a brisk 94 off 100 balls before falling short of a century, while Crawley made a powerful 84 off 113 deliveries. Together, they added 166 runs for the opening wicket, punishing India’s bowlers who struggled to find a breakthrough. Though India finally removed both openers, the damage had been done. At stumps, Ollie Pope was batting on 20 alongside Joe Root on 11.

Earlier, India resumed the day on 264 for 4 and quickly lost Ravindra Jadeja in just the second over when he edged Jofra Archer to second slip. However, valuable lower-order runs from Shardul Thakur (41) and Washington Sundar (27) pushed the total to 358. A special highlight of the morning was Rishabh Pant’s return. Batting with a fractured toe, he showed remarkable determination to contribute 54 off just 75 balls after retiring hurt the day before. His resilience was applauded by the Old Trafford crowd as he walked out and fought through visible discomfort.

England’s bowling attack, led by skipper Ben Stokes, did a tidy job wrapping up the Indian innings. Stokes finished with impressive figures of 5 for 72, his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket since 2017. The second new ball, taken at the start of the day, played a key role in helping England finish off the Indian tail.

India now finds itself on the back foot as England’s batters have laid a strong foundation. With eight wickets in hand and batting conditions still helpful, the hosts will look to build a significant first-innings lead. The Indian bowlers, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly and find breakthroughs on Day 3 to pull themselves back into the contest.

As things stand, this Test match is tilting in England’s favour, thanks to disciplined batting at the top and a fighting effort with the ball earlier in the day.

India vs England Live Score: Ben Stokes leads the way
Bumrah didn’t look pleased as he walked off , shaking his head and even exchanging a few words with a cameraman, though it’s unclear why. India have been bowled out for 358, with England’s seamers stepping up today. They consistently hit a better length and made good use of the second new ball, extracting movement and bounce from the surface.

Ben Stokes was the standout, claiming his first five-wicket haul in eight years. His rhythm throughout the series has been exceptional, and he once again led the charge. For India, the biggest talking point was Rishabh Pant bravely batting with a broken foot and managing to add valuable runs. All things considered, 358 could prove to be a solid total on a pitch that’s offering plenty for the bowlers — with both lateral movement and variable bounce on show.

India vs England Live Score: Stuart Broad speaks
“There was plenty of action in the morning session, and England began really well — especially Jofra Archer, who bowled a gem to remove Ravindra Jadeja in his very first over,” the commentator noted. “But after that, it felt like England lost their discipline a bit and bowled too wide.

“Given how much the new ball was moving, and with the overcast skies and lights on, England would’ve expected to grab four or five wickets in those conditions.

“Full credit to India for how they batted. They’ve put themselves in a solid position now. On this pitch, anything over 350 will be a strong total — especially with Bumrah and Siraj ready to unleash later in the day.”

IND vs ENG Live Score: Lunch break!
It was a fairly productive morning session for India as they pushed their total beyond the 320 mark. Although Archer struck early by dismissing Jadeja, India fought back through a determined partnership between Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur. Thakur capitalised on loose deliveries and found the boundary on occasion, but his stay ended when Duckett pulled off a stunning catch at gully, diving to his left to take a beauty.

Rishabh Pant, who suffered a foot injury on Day 1, received a warm welcome from the Manchester crowd as he came in after Thakur’s wicket. His movement between the wickets looked laboured, and it’ll be interesting to see how he goes about his innings once play resumes after lunch. With the overhead conditions still gloomy, England’s bowlers will be hoping to make the most of it in the next session.

England asserted control on Day 2 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, reaching 225 for 2 at stumps in response to India’s first-innings total of 358. Openers Ben Duckett (94) and Zak Crawley (84) gave the hosts a powerful start, stitching together a 166-run stand that helped them cut down India’s lead to just 133 by the close of play.

Earlier, Rishabh Pant battled through pain to score a brave fifty after returning to the crease with a fractured toe. His 54 off 75 balls lifted India's total past the 350-run mark before England bowled them out shortly after lunch. England captain Ben Stokes stood out with the ball, taking 5 for 72 — his first five-wicket haul in Tests since 2017.

India lost Ravindra Jadeja early in the morning session, but contributions from Shardul Thakur (41) and Washington Sundar (27) helped build on the overnight lead.

At the end of the day's play, Ollie Pope (20*) and Joe Root (11*) were unbeaten, giving England a solid grip on the match. With two days remaining, England look well-placed to surpass India’s total and potentially take a first-innings lead.
