LEEDS
: Former Sri Lanka opener
Sanath Jayasuriya raised eyebrows when he was seen in the stands enjoying his country take on India along with former teammate
Aravinda de Silva on Saturday.
WORLD CUP SCHEDULE | POINTS TABLEJayasuriya's presence at a World Cup game is significant considering that in February earlier this year, the ICC had banned the explosive left-hander from all
cricket
for two years after he admitted to two breaches of their Anti-Corruption Code. The World Cup is an ICC event.
Jayasuriya was accused of failing to cooperate with a probe into corruption, and delaying or obstructing it, after the ICC issued a demand to examine his mobile phones. The 49-year-old admitted both breaches and had accepted the sanction.
"He can come to the match as a fan/ spectator, but he can't interact with the Lankan team or its officials at the stadium or in the hotel. That's been communicated to the Sri Lankan management. Obviously, Jayasuriya is also aware about what his boundaries during the ban period are," an ICC official told TOI on Saturday.
