NEW DELHI: Avishka Fernando's first one-day international century steered Sri Lanka to a thrilling 23-run win over the West Indies in an inconsequential World Cup match on Monday.

Avishka Fernando's knock of 104 runs enabled Sri Lanka to post a challenging total of 338 runs on board for the loss of six wickets in the allotted fifty overs after being put into bat. Fernando also became the youngest Sri Lankan batsman to register a century in the World Cup.

The 21-year-old reached three figures off exactly 100 balls with eight fours and two sixes but was caught by Fabian Allen off the bowling of Sheldon Cottrell for 104.

Both teams came into the match aware they could not reach the semi-finals but the Caribbean side came close to pulling off the highest successful chase in World Cup history as they finished on 315/9.

Sri Lanka revived their fading hopes of reaching the World Cup semi-finals by beating England but a heavy defeat to South Africa and results elsewhere ended their chances.
