NEW DELHI: Comeback man Haris Sohail smashed a rapid-fire 89 as Pakistan kept their slim hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive on Sunday. The comfortable 49-run victory took the 1992 champions to seventh in the standings with five points from six games, same as Bangladesh who are at sixth on superior net run rate.

In the process, Pakistan ended South Africa's World Cup hopes at Lord's.

Haris Sohail's performance 89 off 59 balls | 3x6s & 9x4s

Opting to bat, Sohail's dominant 59-ball knock and a tidy half century from Babar Azam (69 off 80) helped Pakistan reach 308/7, a total that South Africa never threatened to surpass.

Pakistan got off to a flying start with openers Fakhar Zaman (44) and Imam-ul-Haq (44) adding 81 for the first wicket.

Sohail then added 71 runs with Imad Wasim for the fifth wicket to increase the tempo in the end. Wasim made 23 before he was caught trying to whack Lungi Ngidi over the rope, and Sohail helped Pakistan past 300 before his innings ended when he was caught by Quinton de Kock off Ngidi in the final over.
