NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan cricket captain, Inzamam-Ul-Haq, voiced his opinion on Wednesday, calling for India and Pakistan to engage in bilateral cricket matches. Inzamam expressed his sentiments while visiting Amritsar and took the opportunity to commend the Pakistan cricket team for their outstanding victory against Sri Lanka in a high-scoring World Cup match on Tuesday.
Inzamam, known for his illustrious cricketing career and insights, particularly lauded the performance of Abdullah Shafique and Mohammed Rizwan, who played pivotal roles in Pakistan's historic win.
During an interview with ANI, he stated, "Pakistan team is playing well, and credit should go to the team, especially Abdullah Shafique and Rizwan; they played well. If the team continues this performance, the result will be great. It should happen (India-Pakistan matches), and both teams should play with each other. This is a good thing."
His call for India and Pakistan to resume bilateral cricket matches reflects the sentiment of countless cricket enthusiasts who eagerly await the revival of one of the most storied rivalries in the sport. The last time India played in Pakistan was in 2008 during the Asia Cup, and since then, bilateral series have been on hold. The two nations have met on neutral grounds in various tournaments, but a full-fledged bilateral series is yet to be organised.
In the recent high-scoring encounter between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, both sides displayed remarkable batting performances, creating a record-breaking World Cup match. Pakistan successfully chased down a target of 344, thanks to centuries from Shafique and Rizwan. Rizwan's unbeaten 131 off 121 balls and Shafique's 113, along with a fiery cameo from Iftikhar Ahmed, led Pakistan to victory with 10 balls to spare. Notably, this match marked the first time in the men's World Cup history that four centuries were scored in a single game.
