Rohit Sharma breaks Chris Gayle's record, becomes first to hit 50 sixes in World Cup

NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma, the Indian cricket team's star opener, made headlines on Wednesday as he became the first batter to hit 50-plus sixes in the World Cup. This remarkable feat saw him surpass the previous record held by West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who had hit 49 sixes in the prestigious tournament.


Not only did 'Hitman' Rohit break the overall record, but he also became the batter with the most sixes in a single World Cup edition. This achievement once again saw him surpass Chris Gayle, who had hit 26 maximums in the 2015 World Cup.



Rohit's record-breaking moment came in the fifth over of the match against New Zealand, when he pulled a delivery from Trent Boult over deep backward square leg for his 50th six in World Cups. The crowd erupted in celebration as he etched his name in the history books.

Showing no signs of slowing down, Rohit continued his onslaught and added another maximum in the very next over. This time, he smoked a delivery from Mitchell Santner over deep square leg, showcasing his incredible power and skill.




Rohit eventually fell for 47, off 29 balls, with the help of four maximums and four boundaries. He now has 51 sixes in World Cup, including 28 in this edition.
