NEW DELHI: Australia emerged victorious against India in a thrilling ODI World Cup final showdown on Sunday, and opener David Warner has shed light on the unorthodox decision-making process that saw the Aussies opt to field after winning the crucial toss.Speaking on AB de Villiers' YouTube channel, the left-handed batter disclosed that despite statistical indicators favouring batting first, the Australian squad, after a lengthy discussion the night before, opted to chase. Warner shared insights into the team's thought process, stating, "We were discussing it the night before for a good hour-and-a-half or two hours about what to do. All the stats coming through were saying, bat first and put runs on the board. But for once, when we asked that question, I think a majority of us said let's just chase." The decision to bowl first was rooted in a strategic approach to understand the conditions before taking on the chase. Warner explained, "If we bowl well and understand the conditions like that, we can then chase and then anchor."Praising the composure of fast bowler Pat Cummins, Warner emphasised Cummins' calm demeanour throughout the match.
Addressing criticisms of Cummins' captaincy in England, Warner defended the player, stating, "He has been so calm the whole time. He was criticised in England for his fielding placements, being defensive and all that...It's not fair. I get that as a captain he is leading the ship, but as a whole unit, we take responsibility ourselves. It was a testament to that in terms of the way we went about it."
