NEW DELHI: A young Indian squad will launch its bid for a maiden title when they take on New Zealand in the opening clash of the Women's World T20 at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Friday.
Since the inception of the Women’s World T20 in 2009, held in England, India have participated in all five editions played so far. Their best showing was in the 2009 and 2010 editions, when they reached the semi-finals.
In the last three editions though, India have failed to go past the group stage.
Going into the sixth edition of the mega event, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian team after their opening match against New Zealand, will face arch-rivals Pakistan on November 11, Ireland on November 15 and three-time champions Australia on November 17.
With the mega event set to kick off, let’s have a look at India’s performances in the previous five editions.
World T20 2009: India were led by
Jhulan Goswami in the inaugural edition of the mega event. Placed in Group B alongside England, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, India kicked off their campaign on a dismal note. They suffered a 10-wicket thrashing at the hands of England but bounced back in style and registered easy wins in their next two matches - against Pakistan and Sri Lanka - to enter the semi-finals. India lost to New Zealand by 52 runs in the semi-finals.
World T20 2010: Jhulan Gowaswami-led India once again as the women in blue entered the tournament as one of the favourites. India, who were placed in Group B alongside New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, suffered a 10-run defeat at the hands of New Zealand in their opening encounter but went on to win their remaining two matches - against Pakistan and Sri Lanka - to book a semi-final berth. India lost to Australia by 7 wickets in the semi-finals.
World T20 2012: This was a disappointing outing for India. The team, captained by
Mithali Raj, lost their all three Group stage matches against Australia, England and Pakistan and faced an early ouster from the mega event.
World T20 2014: For the first time, 10 teams participated in the tournament. India, led by Mithali Raj were in Group B and once again failed to enter the knock-outs of the tournament. England and West Indies progressed to the semi-finals from Group B.
World T20 2016: India hosted the fifth edition of the mega event. Mithali Raj scored a brilliant 42 as India kicked off the tournament on a winning note, defeating Bangladesh by 72 runs in their opening match. India's hopes of winning the title on home soil were dashed though after they suffered three back-to-back defeats (against Pakistan, England and West Indies) in the Group stage.
