NEW DELHI: Two-time champions West Indies successfully contained Papua New Guinea to a below-par total of 136 for eight, despite Sese Bau's impressive half-century in their T20 World Cup opener in Georgetown on Sunday

Bau's resilient knock of 50 runs off 43 balls provided a much-needed boost to Papua New Guinea's innings. Despite facing a challenging situation, his performance on the big stage showcased his ability to make an impact.

Papua New Guinea found themselves struggling at 50 for four before Bau combined forces with Charles Amini (12) to stabilize the innings with a crucial 44-run partnership.

Anticipating spin-friendly conditions, West Indies opted for three spinners and elected to bowl first after winning the toss.

This decision proved fruitful as early as the opening over, delivered by Akeal Hosein, where the assistance for spinners became evident.

However, it was pacer Romario Shepherd who made the breakthrough, dismissing Tony Ura caught behind in the second over of the match. Shepherd's delivery moved away, inducing a thick edge from the batsman.

Akeal Hosein claimed the wicket of number three batsman Lega Siaka with an arm ball, while Alzarri Joseph removed PNG skipper Assad Vala (21 off 22 balls). Vala had showcased his batting prowess with a couple of crisp hits in the cover region before being brilliantly caught by Roston Chase at backward point.

Vala's six over extra cover off spinner Chase in the previous over stood out as one of the highlights of PNG's innings.

Sese Bau then took charge to ensure that boundaries continued to flow intermittently as PNG aimed to consolidate their innings.

Similar to Vala, the left-handed Bau unleashed his attacking instincts against left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, dispatching him for a six and a couple of fours to inject much-needed momentum into the innings.

Following Bau's dismissal, the associate nation put up a commendable effort to approach the 140-run mark.
