From Misbah-ul-Haq's scoop, Carlos Brathwaite's sixes to Suryakumar Yadav's catch: A T20 World Cup history
The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is the largest ever but also perhaps the most politically charged, with off-field drama hogging the limelight in a turbulent buildup.
As the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 begins on Saturday across venues in India and Sri Lanka, the tournament marks another chapter in a competition that began 19 years ago. From its first edition in South Africa in 2007 to the 2024 event in the USA and Caribbean, the T20 World Cup has seen the format grow in scale and reach.
The 2026 edition will be the 10th Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled from February 7 to March 8. The inaugural tournament featured 12 teams. The competition has since expanded to include 20 teams from around the world.
So far, six teams have won the title. West Indies, England and defending champions India are the only sides to have lifted the trophy twice.
T20 cricket emerged in the early 2000s as an effort to bring new audiences to the sport. The format was first played at the professional level in England in 2003 and quickly gained popularity in other countries.
The first ICC Men’s T20 World Cup set the tone for what the format could offer. West Indies batter Chris Gayle struck the first ball of the tournament for four and went on to score 117 against South Africa, registering the first T20I century.

In the final at the Wanderers, India made 157 for 5, with Gautam Gambhir scoring 75 off 54 balls. Pakistan stayed in the chase before India’s bowlers applied pressure. With six needed off the last four balls and one wicket left, Misbah was caught by Sreesanth at short fine leg off Joginder Sharma, sealing India’s win.
The Netherlands defeated England at Lord’s in the group stage, while Australia exited after losing two matches. The final came months after the attack on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore.
Sri Lanka slipped to 32 for 4 before Kumar Sangakkara made 64 to guide them to 138 for 6. Pakistan chased the target with Shahid Afridi scoring an unbeaten 54 and hitting the winning run as a leg bye.

New Zealand made 172 for 4 in the final, led by Kane Williamson’s 85. Australia chased the target with contributions from David Warner and Mitch Marsh to win their first T20 title.
