Cannot be unidimensional with bat: Morne Morkel

AHMEDABAD: As the Indian camp gets ready for the Super 8 stage, bowling coach Morne Morkel war ned against being unidimensional, suggesting batters should look to score between 250 and 300 in every match.

The Indian team surprisingly pivoted from its ‘all-outattack’ approach after the collapse against USA in the beginning of their campaign.



Morkel said the tacky nature of the pitches forced the issue. “I understand there are certain expectations of the fans. There’s a lot of pressure on curators to produce high-scoring games. In terms of playing on these pitches, it’s important for us to communicate with the players.

“It may be a 170-type of surface. You can’t have just tunnel vision and be one-dimensional where we’re going to try and score 300 or 250 every game. We have the bowling to defend a target of 170-180 on these pitches as well,” Morkel said.

Morkel also said that the team is open to playing different bowling conditions depending on the surfaces.

“We do discuss options in terms of how we can approach our bowling against different teams. It’s important to stay aware and keep looking for ways that we can strike better,” Morkel added.
