ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Points Table: Australia, South Africa, India and New Zealand start campaign with commanding wins

NEW DELHI: Josh Inglis played a career-defining knock, smashing an unbeaten 120 off 86 balls as Australia pulled off the highest-ever chase in ICC white-ball tournament history, defeating England by five wickets in their Champions Trophy Group B opener.

England’s Ben Duckett had earlier set the stage with a stunning 165 off 143 balls, guiding his team to a tournament-record 351/8. However, on a flat Gaddafi Stadium pitch with a rapid outfield, no target was safe.

Australia, initially struggling at 27/2, regained momentum through a crucial 146-run fifth-wicket stand between Inglis and Alex Carey (69 off 63). Even after Carey’s dismissal in the 42nd over, Glenn Maxwell’s explosive 32* off 15 balls ensured a smooth finish.

Inglis fittingly sealed the chase in style, launching Mark Wood for a six over deep midwicket with 15 balls to spare, handing Australia a historic victory.




South Africa opened their Champions Trophy campaign with a commanding 107-run victory over Afghanistan in Karachi on Friday. Opener Ryan Rickelton led the charge with a maiden ODI century, scoring 103 off 106 balls, supported by Temba Bavuma (58), Rassie van der Dussen (52), and Aiden Markram (52*), as South Africa posted 315/6.

Chasing 316, Afghanistan faltered early, losing key batters within the first 15 overs. Rahmat Shah (90 off 92) fought a lone battle, but with no substantial support, Afghanistan was bowled out for 208 in 43.3 overs. Kagiso Rabada (3/36), Wiaan Mulder (2/36), and Lungi Ngidi (2/56) ensured there was no comeback.

On Thursday, in-form Shubman Gill led India to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their Champions Trophy opener in Dubai. Chasing a tricky target of 229 on a challenging surface, Gill remained unbeaten on 101, steering India home with 21 balls to spare.

India, playing their matches in Dubai after refusing to tour host nation Pakistan, showcased their dominance early. Mohammed Shami was instrumental in setting up the win with a sensational 5-53 spell, reducing Bangladesh to 35/5. However, Towhid Hridoy (100) and Jaker Ali (68) revived Bangladesh with a 154-run stand for the sixth wicket. Despite India's sloppy fielding, including two dropped catches, Bangladesh managed 228 all out.

On Wednesday, New Zealand stormed to the top of Group A in the ICC Champions Trophy after a commanding 60-run victory over Pakistan in the tournament opener on Wednesday. The Kiwis' strong start was powered by sensational centuries from Tom Latham and Will Young, setting the tone for their campaign.
