From Australia to England: What’s changed in India’s Test squad
India have ushered in a new era in Test cricket, naming 25-year-old Shubman Gill as captain for the upcoming five-match series against England. Gill replaces Rohit Sharma, who announced his retirement from the longest format on May 7. He becomes India's 37th Test captain and will lead the side in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, starting June 20.
Gill made his Test debut against Australia in Melbourne in 2020 and has since played 32 matches, scoring 1893 runs with five centuries and seven half-centuries.

The squad marks a generational shift with several senior players stepping away. Alongside Rohit, veteran batter Virat Kohli and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin have also retired from Test cricket. Their absence signals a new beginning for Indian cricket in the red-ball format.
Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain and first-choice wicketkeeper. The batting unit includes young and promising names like Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, and Karun Nair. Dhruv Jurel has been retained as the backup wicketkeeper, while Nitish Kumar Reddy continues as a batting all-rounder.
The bowling department sees continuity and fresh inclusions. Jasprit Bumrah leads the pace attack alongside Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh. Spin duties will be handled by Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav. Shardul Thakur returns as a seam-bowling all-rounder.

From the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 to the England tour in 2025, India’s Test squad has undergone significant changes. Senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R Ashwin have all retired from the format, marking the end of an era. Additionally, Sarfaraz Khan and Harshit Rana have been dropped, while Devdutt Padikkal and Tanush Kotian miss out due to injury concerns.
In their place, the selectors have brought in fresh faces and experienced names looking for comebacks. Karun Nair returns to the red-ball setup, while promising batters like Sai Sudharsan and all-round options such as Shardul Thakur and pacer Arshdeep Singh have been included. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav also finds a spot, adding variety to the spin department as India heads into a challenging five-match series in England.
