NEW DELHI: Australian spin great Shane Warne has taken to Twitter to clarify his "too expensive" comments in regards to applying to be coach of the Indian cricket team, claiming that a joke has been blown out of proportion.

Warne was quoted as saying by a Mumbai-based tabloid on Tuesday, in regards to whether he was interested in applying for the coach's role: "I am very expensive, I don't think they can afford me. Virat Kohli and me can have a good partnership, but as I said, I am very, very expensive."

Facing a backlash by sections of the Indian media and fans of Indian cricket on social media,

Warne

did not deny his jibe but tweeted that it was a joke taken out of context. "I was in a lift and was asked if I would put my hat in the ring. I said "India can't afford me" tongue in cheek," he tweeted.

The BCCI late last month announced that it would begin the process for new applicants for the position of head coach of the Indians men's cricket team, with Anil Kumble a direct entrant into the process by virtue of being the current coach. Kumble's tenure expires following the conclusion of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy - where India will hope to defend the title they won in 2013 under MS Dhoni - which runs from June 1 to 18.
