BIRMINGHAM: Indian captain
Virat Kohli has dismissed all suggestions of an alleged "rift" with coach
Anil Kumble and rubbished talk of any disquiet in the team camp. Fending off multiple bouncers hurled at him in the prematch interaction, Kohli instead lambasted the media for what he termed biased and inaccurate coverage of the whole incident, all while admitting that "differences" did exist with Kumble.
"Agreements and disagreements happen," he said.
"It's normal to have disagreements, even at home. Not everyone agrees with everything. It's human nature." Asked specifically if there were bad vibes brewing between him and Kumble, Kohli said, "There are no problems whatsoever. If something is put in place as a process, I don't see why people are creating so much speculation about it. It's been followed last time as well, and I didn't see any issues being created last time. It's the same process."
Pakistan coach
Mickey Arthur, later, dismissed the whole incident as "India's problem", while describing the coach-captain relationship as a "marriage". And marriages, he implied, aren't always made in heaven, although that doesn't mean they don't work out.
The operational arm of the Indian cricket board advertised for fresh applications for the India coaching job just as the team left for England, and the presence here of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CaC) comprising
Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and
Sachin Tendulkar has led to talk of the team's
Champions Trophy campaign being overshadowed by the coach-selection process, which must be completed before the team leaves for the West Indies after this tournament.
"The team is totally focused on the Champions Trophy," said Kohli. "I would not comment on things that I am not fully aware of. I would not speculate. I think there is a lack of patience right now (with the media) and nobody admits mistakes. If you write something and it goes wrong, you must admit you have gone wrong rather than saying the problem has been solved.
"They (the media) are just doing their job, they're trying to create some nice livelihood. We're focused on our livelihood, which is playing on the field. Unless someone is part of something, they should not sit in judgment over it. I'm not here to pass judgment on anyone's life."
Asked to elaborate on the year-long stint with Kumble, however, Kohli appeared a bit reticent. "It's been good. The whole journey has been good. It's something I don't need to elaborate sitting here. There are people who would know better about that and can elaborate better. But yeah, it's been good."
Kohli may have been stressed out by the allegations of the past few weeks but said he had learnt to "switch off "."I don't put so much pressure on myself all the time. I have never played irresponsibly even when I wasn't captain.
'Team combination causing headache'Kohli said figuring out Sunday's XI had been causing him headaches. "That's been on my mind in the past five-six days. Who to play is the problem. There are all kinds of possibilities: two spinners, two fast bowlers, three fast bowlers, Hardik and a spinner."
That last option of including Hardik and a spinner, along with three fast bowlers, seems the most feasible at the moment, but that means
Ravichandran Ashwin may have to miss out.
