NEW DELHI: The Big Bash League witnessed an unwanted scene on Sunday with the match between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong being called off due to a dangerous pitch.

The Scorchers were 2-30 from 6.5 overs when umpires decided to take players off the field. Play was suspended due to the uneven bounce, leading to its eventual abandonment.

There were concerns before the match as the heavy overnight rain in Geelong seeped under the covers and onto the playing surface.

Despite the concerns, the Renegades won the toss and Nic Maddinson wasted no time in sending the reigning champions in.

"The wicket's absolutely drenched so we just want to have a look what's going to happen," Maddinson said at the toss.

This was the first time in the history of the BBL that unsafe pitch conditions forced a match to be abandoned.

The points will be shared between the two teams, but the early conclusion of the match left fans devastated. Boos resonated throughout the ground, and a few spectators expressed their disappointment by hurling objects onto the field.
