NEW DELHI: At 22 years old, Mayank Yadav made his debut for the national team during the first T20I against Bangladesh in Gwalior on Sunday, showcasing the high speeds expected of him.
He bowled four overs, claiming one wicket while conceding 21 runs, resulting in an economy rate of 5.20. Mayank certainly impressed with his pace, and it’s worth examining the speeds of his deliveries throughout the match.
The Bangladeshi batters had a difficult time facing Mayank, but when Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was asked about it, he responded that they are used to facing such speeds in the nets.
"We have some similar fast bowlers in the nets. I don’t think we were too worried about (Mayank Yadav). But he is a good bowler," Shanto said after India won the first T20I by 7 wickets.
In his four-over spell, Mayank consistently clocked speeds above 140 km/h in 17 out of the 24 deliveries he bowled, although he did not breach the 150 km/h barrier. According to
Wisden, his average pace of 138.7 km/h was influenced by a few slower deliveries.
Wisden reported that Mayank's opening over, a maiden, saw him reach a top speed of 147.6 km/h and a minimum speed of 138 km/h, with an average pace of 142.5 km/h throughout the over.
The second over witnessed Mayank's quickest delivery at 149.9 km/h, while his slowest ball was recorded at 113.3 km/h, resulting in an average speed of 140.1 km/h for the over.
In the third over, Mayank conceded 15 runs, with his fastest delivery clocking 147.7 km/h and his slowest at 140.7 km/h. His average speed for the over was 145 km/h.
Mayank made an impressive comeback in his final over, conceding just three runs after an expensive previous over. His top speed in this over was 146.5 km/h, with his slowest delivery recorded at 106.2 km/h, resulting in an average pace of 127 km/h.
On the BCCI's official website, Mayank, who clocked 149.9 km/h, said, "It’s a great moment because I’m coming back from injury. I was a bit nervous this time, but I kept telling myself not to stress. When I found out I would be playing my first match, the whole flashback of the last four months came to mind."
Mayank gained attention in the IPL 2024 with his blistering pace while representing the Lucknow Super Giants. Despite his tournament being cut short due to an injury, the speedster made a strong recovery, earning a place in India's squad and ultimately making his international debut.
