Australia vs Netherlands highlights, World Cup 2023: Australia thrash Netherlands by 309 runs

AUS vs NED World Cup 2023 highlights: Glenn Maxwell smashed the fastest hundred in the history of the 50-overs World Cup as Australia thrashed the Netherlands by 309 runs in what was their third successive win of the tournament on Wednesday.

Eighteen days after South Africa's Aiden Markram smashed a 49-ball hundred at the same Arun Jaitley Stadium against Sri Lanka, Maxwell took nine balls fewer to bring up his century.

The all-rounder produced a blistering 106 off 44 balls and opener David Warner made 104 as Australia racked up 399-8 after electing to bat.

The five-time champions then returned to bundle out their opponents for 90 in 21 overs, subjecting the Dutch to the biggest defeat in the tournament's history.

Earlier with Travis Head continuing his recovery from a fractured hand, Mitchell Marsh retained his place as Warner's opening partner but did not last long.

The Netherlands began with spin from both ends and Warner smashed Aryan Dutt for four fours in a row to signal his intention early.

The feisty left-hander raced to a 91-ball hundred, his second successive ton in the tournament, and took off his helmet and leapt in his trademark celebration.

Logan van Beek (4-74) removed Warner soon after but Steve Smith (71) and Marnus Labuschagne (62) helped themselves to easy half-centuries.

The Dutch bowlers briefly stemmed the run flow but the ground had been laid for Maxwell to explode with the bat.

The all-rounder toyed with the Dutch attack smacking nine fours and eight sixes in his clattering innings.

He was particularly harsh on de Leede, who bled 115 runs in his 10 overs - the most by a bowler in a men's ODI. It included 28 runs in de Leede's final over alone.

With Maxwell playing some outrageous shots on either side of the wicket, Australia plundered 131 runs in the final 10 overs.

It left the Netherlands with a mountain to climb and they faltered early in their chase losing both the openers inside six overs.

Adam Zampa then ran through their lower order to claim three for eight runs to hasten their collapse.

Really happy, complete game. To put 400 on board and then defend well, couldn't be happier. Crazy innings. I think we both contributed equally in that hundred partnership (chuckles). Fantastic innings, the cleanest hitting I've seen. We played the style we liked to. Please with Smithy getting runs. We were aiming for powerplay wickets, bowled quite well without a lot of luck. Zamps with another four-fer. They (New Zealand) are a really good side.. Big game in Dharamsala. It's the World Cup and we are in a good space, can't wait to get there. (Areas to improve) I don't think we have totally nailed the 50 overs with the bat yet.

Pat Cummins, Australia captain

20:58 (IST) Oct 25

They are a quality side, we should have been better today. Execution (what could have been done better with ball). You miss by fractions and you get out of the park. Full credit to the Aussies. We got back in a bit there with 10 overs to go. Maxwell got going and we couldn't stop him. Pretty nice wicket here and ball travels so quickly. Those two (opening batters) were awesome for us for the last 18 months and one of the reasons why we are here so we back them all the way. Just touch on things to improve and move on quickly from this and prepare ourselves for the next game.

Scott Edwards, Netherlands captain

20:56 (IST) Oct 25

It was a special day for him (Maxwell). The rock the cradle celebration was special as well. We spoke about it during the IPL, it is about timing and rhythm. First game in Chennai always challenging, need time to get used to wickets here. Going back to basics, be nice and still. I know I have the ability to bat in these conditions and it's about backing your skill. I ran a 2 for my mate (for Steve Smith), he nearly ran me out (laughs loudly) I will remember this for a long time. I pride myself on my fitness. Kohli does it as well. Running as hard as well for your team-mate.

David Warner

I was just trying to give ourselves a good platform at the end. You can certainly cash in on this ground with bat (batting first towards the end) and it seams under lights. Nice to get some rhythm finally in the tournament. Huge confidence booster. Some doubts do creep in when you are consistently not making runs. Hopefully I can ride forward from this. Pretty much the perfect game with bat and ball for us. Three wins now and certainly starting to get that momentum as a team.

Feels pretty good, I was not feeling well, wasn't expecting much today, cleared my head. The situation when Davey and Greeny got out, had to rein myself in. Patty was good as well. Even if they are banging it into the wicket, I feel I have enough time to go after it. And when they are bowling quick, my hands have to be faster. Just generally try to get it over the infield. They were outstanding (Netherlands fielding), they saved certain boundaries in the first 25 overs. It was a rock-hard outfield and they did so well. The ball seems to travel here, hopefully we get through the top order and put pressure on their middle order. Also put run-rate pressure. Nice to have the kid here - it's been a while.
