India vs Australia: No one was prepared to see us collapsing, says Shreyas Iyer

RAJKOT: Middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer feels the Indian team needs to experiment more in order to find the perfect ODI combination. “One should be ready to bat at any position. Experimentation is something we are looking forward to and hopefully it will work out in the future,’’ said the 25-year-old ahead of the second India-Australia ODI.

On why he was not played at his usual No. 4 position in the first game at the Wankhede, the Mumbaikar said it was done in the interest of the team, to accommodate both Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul apart from regular opener Rohit Sharma. Skipper Virat Kohli took Iyer’s usual position of No. 4 at Wankhede.

“Currently in this situation you should be ready to bat at any number because it is really important to be part of the team and the kind of competition we have. We can’t give any reasons for batting at any particular number. It’s very important for us to be focused and not cry about that we haven’t been batting at particular position," Iyer said.

Iyer also stated that the team was not prepared for the kind of middle-order collapse that happened at the Wankhede.

"Sometimes you are not prepared. No one was prepared to see us collapsing in such a way. But it is a part and parcel of the game. You have to take it in your stride and move forward. As a team we have been doing really well throughout the season and it was just one of the matches, although I must admit that it was a disappointing performance."
