CHENNAI: The sparkling stars of last IPL -
Rahul Tripathi,
Nitish Rana and
Washington Sundar - have all been included in the Board President’s XI for the practice match against Australia to be held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on September 12.
Australia are set to begin their five-match ODI series against India with the series opener at Chepauk on September 17. The Australian team is expected to arrive in Chennai in batches on September 8 and September 9.
With the senior stars of domestic cricket set to battle it out in the Duleep Trophy from today, TOI has learnt that the selectors have picked a dashing young team for the practice match. Former India cricketer Hemang Badani has been named the coach of the side. Badani was the coach of Chepauk Super Gillies that lifted the second edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League last month.
Tripathi set the stage on fire with his dashing batting display for the Pune Supergiant, while Rana was brilliant for the Mumbai Indians at the top-order.
Young Washington was a revelation with the new ball for Pune bowling in the powerplay choking the left-handers as well as picking up crucial wickets. The 17-year-old TN cricketer followed it up with a phenomenal show in the TNPL as an opener and as an off-spinner for Tuti Patriots.
The other notable names in the squad are Mayank Agarwal, Shreevats Goswami, Gurkeerat Mann, ambidextrous spinner Akshay Karnewar, Govind Poddar, TN left-arm spinner Rahil Shah, pacers Sandeep Sharma, Avesh Khan and Kulwant Khejroliya.
Some of the names in the squad such Poddar, Karnewar, Khejroliya, Mann were all part of various squads during the Deodhar Trophy held earlier this year. Rahil and Washington played key roles in Tamil Nadu’s twin-title wins - Vijay Hazare and Deodhar Trophy - earlier this year.
The tour match will be a day game. It is not yet sure as to who will lead the Board President’s XI.
