BENGALURU: Virat Kohli's dismissal was the focal point of the day. Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood trapped the Indian skipper leg before sparking dramatic scenes as Kohli fumed, convinced that the ball had made contact with the bat before hitting the pad.
Kohli, who opted for a review, looked frustrated as he walked back after third umpire Richard Kettleborough found no conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field umpire's call.
But Hazlewood, who bagged the prized wicket, was confident the correct decision had been made. "Initially, I just heard a bit of wood, so I sort of pulled out of the appeal. But I saw the guys behind and square of the wicket were pretty confident and obviously it got given out. After looking at the reviews, you could see the ball just touching the pad before the bat. So it had to stick with the on-field call."
"Yeah, he (Kohli) was confident he got some bat on that delivery which is why he reviewed it. As we saw (from the replays), it was pretty tight. I think the temperature went up a little bit (when he was given out) but he had to stick to the on-field umpire's call," the right-arm pacer added.
Tempers flared when spinner Steve O'Keefe was warned for a heated outburst against Cheteshwar Pujara following the dismissal of KL Rahul. "I am not too sure. Smith was celebrating a good catch but that was the plan we had for Rahul - to get him out that way. We got lucky with that dismissal," he said.
Hazlewood said the series is turning out to be fierce after India bounced back into contention building a 126-run lead going into the fourth day. "Temperatures are rising a little bit - yesterday and today (Sunday & Monday). It's pretty intense out there. But we are trying to stick to our skills and be calm out there. It feels pretty level at the moment. They fought back really well in the last session."
Talking about the impressive unbroken 93-run partnership between Pujara and Rahane, Hazlewood said: "They were more intent in the crease, scoring off those looser deliveries. They kept rotating the strike, which is the key here," he said.
