IPL team protests India-Pakistan Asia Cup match in unseen manner; No words used

As anticipation builds for the India-Pakistan Asia Cup match in Dubai on September 14, IPL franchise Punjab Kings drew attention for an unusual move, as they announcing the fixture on social media without naming Pakistan as India’s opponent.

The post, which simply highlighted India’s upcoming game, quickly went viral. Reactions poured in so heavily that the franchise later disabled comments on its X channel. The omission has been understood by many as a symbolic protest against India playing its arch-rival, a stance that has further intensified debate around the fixture.

The controversy is part of a larger set of calls to cancel the match altogether.

A petition filed in the Supreme Court argued that staging cricket ties with Pakistan undermines the sacrifices of Indian soldiers and terror victims. The plea stated: “Cricket between nations is meant to show harmony and friendship. But after the Phalagam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, when our people died and our soldiers risked everything, playing with Pakistan sent the opposite message that while our soldiers sacrificed their lives, we are celebrating sports with the same country sheltering terrorists.”

Petitioners also said such matches could hurt the morale of armed forces and the sentiments of families who lost loved ones. “National dignity and citizen security should take priority over entertainment,” the plea added. The Supreme Court, however, declined to urgently list the matter, allowing the game to go ahead.

The upcoming clash at the Dubai International Stadium remains one of the most watched events in world cricket. Both India and Pakistan have begun their Asia Cup campaigns with massive wins. India against UAE and Pakistan against Oman. Moreover, the two sides could face each other multiple times in the tournament.

For now, Punjab Kings’ decision to leave Pakistan’s name out of their post has become a talking point of its own, showing how the match continues to stir emotions beyond the pitch.
