Asia Cup: India to be penalised for no handshakes after Pakistan win? Here’s what the rules say
NEW DELHI: India's thumping seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 Group A clash in Dubai has been overshadowed by controversy, with the post-match scene sparking heated debate.
Indian players, led by skipper Suryakumar Yadav, walked straight to their dressing room without shaking hands with their Pakistani counterparts — breaking a long-standing cricketing tradition. The move has raised the question: could India be penalised?

The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Preamble – Spirit of Cricket, included in the T20I Playing Conditions, clearly states: “Congratulate the opposition on their success, and enjoy those of your own team. Thank the officials and your opposition at the end of the match, whatever the result.” Furthermore, Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct lists “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game” as a Level 1 offence.
While no official sanction has been announced, experts suggest that denying handshakes could technically be deemed a breach, though penalties for such infractions are usually mild — ranging from warnings to small fines.
Suryakumar Yadav defended the decision, stressing that the team’s action was aligned with directives from the Indian government and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “We are aligned with the government and Board of Control for Cricket in India,” said Yadav, who guided India home with an unbeaten 47.
On the field, India dominated the contest. Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav ripped through Pakistan’s batting with figures of 3/18, restricting them to 127/9. India chased down the target in just 15.5 overs, with Abhishek Sharma (31) giving the early push before Yadav finished the job.
Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson voiced his displeasure at the lack of handshakes, calling it “a disappointing way to finish the match.” In retaliation, Pakistan refused to send captain Salman Agha to the post-match ceremony, with team manager Naveed Cheema formally lodging a protest with match referee Andy Pycroft.
With two wins from two, India are virtually assured of a Super Fours spot. Pakistan, despite the defeat, remain in contention as they prepare to face UAE on Wednesday.
